Periodontitis patients have elevated interleukin-33 (IL-33) levels and soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2 (sST2) compared to healthy individuals. The results showed higher levels of IL-33 and sST2 in periodontitis patients compared to controls. After three months of treatment, sST2 levels decreased significantly. The study concluded that periodontitis, rather than the TLR2 genetic variation, is associated with elevated sST2 and potentially IL-33 levels, and periodontal treatment effectively reduces sST2 levels.
