During the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers conducted a study involving 4,586 children aged 9 to 15 years from the United States, Sweden, Finland, and Germany. They tested the children for type 1 diabetes every 3 or 6 months, depending on their islet autoantibody status, and also for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies at each follow-up visit. Among the children, 15.4% tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, but the incidence of type 1 diabetes did not differ significantly between those with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study suggests no direct link between Covid-19 and type 1 diabetes but acknowledges the need for longer follow-up and consideration of the genetic risk factor.
