Selective Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Vesicoureteral Reflux

This review sheds light on preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children with vesicoureteral reflux. Studies spanning the last 15 years have examined the use of continuous antibiotic prophylaxis for this purpose. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials like the Randomized Intervention for Children with Vesicoureteral Reflux (RIVUR) and Prevention of Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection in Children with Vesicoureteric Reflux and Normal Renal Tracts (PRIVENT) trials demonstrated that continuous antibiotic prophylaxis significantly reduces UTI risk in these children. However, some other randomized trials yielded mixed results, with either no observed benefit or benefits limited to female patients.
