Researchers are investigating the pain-relieving potential of VX-548, an oral inhibitor targeting the NaV1.8 sodium channel in nerve cells. Phase 2 trials studied VX-548's effects on acute pain control after surgeries. In the abdominoplasty trial, the high-dose group experienced significantly reduced pain (37.8 point difference) over 48 hours compared to placebo, with mild to moderate side effects. Lower VX-548 doses and the bunionectomy trial had similar outcomes to placebo. The study highlights VX-548's potential in acute pain management, primarily at higher doses, though accompanied by manageable adverse events like headache and constipation.
