The study aimed to examine the relationship between HbA1c levels and sepsis in adults with type 1 diabetes, as well as explore the connection between HbA1c and mortality in those who developed sepsis. The study included 33,549 adults with type 1 diabetes from the Swedish National Diabetes Register between 2005 and 2015. The results showed a J-shaped relationship between HbA1c levels and sepsis risk, with the lowest risk observed at HbA1c levels around 53 mmol/mol (7.0%). HbA1c levels were not found to be associated with mortality in individuals with sepsis.
