Persistent dysregulation of the small airway epithelium transcriptome due to smoking was identified through serial sampling within individuals over a year. Dysregulated pathways enriched with nonreversible genes included xenobiotic metabolism signalling, bupropion degradation, and nicotine degradation. These findings provide insights into potential therapeutic targets for smoking-related airway diseases.
