Serum IL-8 as a Determinant of Response to Phosphodiesterase-4 Inhibition in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitors show promise for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with bronchitis or high blood eosinophil counts. Researchers aim to pinpoint who benefits most from the PDE4 inhibitor tanimilast. Using diverse datasets, an analysis highlights IL-8 as a key predictor of PDE4 inhibition. Lower IL-8 levels correlate with increased tanimilast effectiveness in preventing COPD exacerbations. Patients with low IL-8, blood eosinophils ≥150 μl−1, or chronic bronchitis experience substantial exacerbation rate reductions.
