Severe Hyperglycemia Linked to Abusive Head Injury in Infants

Severe hyperglycemia may indicate abusive head injury in young children. A retrospective study of 179 pediatric patients with intracranial hemorrhage found significantly higher glucose levels in abuse victims (median: 164 mg/dL) than non-abuse cases (median: 99 mg/dL). All patients with glucose >300 mg/dL were abuse victims. These findings highlight the importance of recognizing severe hyperglycemia as a potential marker for abusive head trauma.
