Sex and Hormones: Keys to Brain Health and Disease

Sex differences, influenced by steroid hormones, profoundly shape brain structure and function throughout life, particularly in the adult hippocampus. This review examines the interplay between steroid hormones and hippocampal neuroplasticity, revealing critical implications for conditions such as depression and Alzheimer disease. Despite its importance, only 5% of neuroscience studies in 2019 directly addressed sex differences, leaving a substantial knowledge gap. By synthesizing insights from hippocampal plasticity and related disorders, the review highlights how male and female physiology impacts disease susceptibility and progression. Emphasizing the inclusion of sex and hormonal influences in research, it advocates for personalized approaches to treatment, aiming to improve outcomes across diverse populations.
