Sex Differences in Patellar Facet Shape in Healthy vs. OA

This study examines sex differences in patellar facet shape in healthy individuals and those with patellofemoral osteoarthritis (OA). Using computed tomography scans of 97 healthy knees (50 females, 47 males) and 67 OA knees (40 females, 27 males), researchers assessed patellar width, height, facet widths, and surface areas. Significant sex differences were found, particularly in medial facet shape, which was more posteriorly curved and taller in males. Lateral facet shape variance was greater in OA groups. These findings suggest that sex differences in patellar morphology could influence OA risk, especially in the lateral facet's shape variance.
