This study aimed to examine the differences in characteristics and outcomes of men and women with type 2 diabetes, with or without cardiovascular disease, who were randomized to once-weekly exenatide or placebo. The study found that women had a less favorable metabolic risk profile and lower use of cardioprotective medications than men but also had lower rates of cardiovascular events compared to men. There was no difference in the effect of treatment between men and women. Despite having worse management of cardiovascular risk factors, women had significantly lower rates of important cardiovascular events not attributable to the effects of study treatment.
