A study of 44 transgender individuals undergoing hormone therapy revealed distinct kidney effects based on hormone type. Feminizing therapy (estradiol) reduced tubular injury biomarkers and increased kidney-protective proteins, while masculinizing therapy (testosterone) had the opposite effect. These findings suggest estradiol may confer renal protection, whereas testosterone may exacerbate inflammation and injury, offering novel insights into sex hormone influences on kidney health.
