A retrospective cohort study involving 49,762 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who initiated dialysis revealed that those using sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is) within three months of dialysis experienced significant clinical benefits. After a median follow-up of two years, SGLT-2i users had a 48% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 52% reduced risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) compared to non-users. Additionally, these patients were 51% more likely to achieve dialysis-free status at 90 days. The study found no significant differences in rates of ketoacidosis, infections, hypoglycemia, dehydration, bone fractures, amputations, or 90-day readmissions, underscoring the cardiovascular protection and safety of SGLT-2is in this population.
