
A study was conducted on 25 randomized controlled trials, encompassing 22,828 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study aimed to assess the impact of Sodium Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on bone metabolism. Results indicated that SGLT2 inhibitors notably increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) and cross-linked C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen (CTX) levels while decreasing serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels. However, no significant effects on bone mineral density (BMD), procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), 25-hydroxy vitamin D, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b (TRACP-5b), and osteocalcin were observed. These findings suggest a potential negative influence of SGLT2 inhibitors on bone metabolism, warranting further investigation to affirm conclusions due to limited study quantity and quality.
