A study applied empagliflozin treatment to lupus-prone MRL/lpr mice, uncovering encouraging results. Empagliflozin significantly reduced anti-dsDNA IgG-specific antibodies, serum creatinine, and proteinuria in these mice and mitigated renal damage. Human biopsy samples also revealed increased SGLT2 expression in lupus nephritis patients. The study suggests that SGLT2 inhibitors could provide non-immunosuppressive therapy for lupus nephritis and other autoimmune kidney diseases, offering hope for improved renal function.
