Single-Cell Analysis Reveals Unique Hormonal, Immunological, and Inflammatory Signatures in Cells that Constitute Endometriosis

A recent study comprehensively analysed endometriosis using single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology. The study examined ovarian endometrial cysts (OEC), superficial peritoneal endometriosis (SPE), and deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) in 12 patients. The study identified various cell clusters, revealing differences in estrogen responsiveness, immunologic characteristics, and inflammation signatures among endometriosis cell types and subtypes. Notable findings included MUC5B+ EEECs, mesothelial cell-derived myofibroblasts, and the NRG1-ERBB3 interaction as potential contributors to endometriosis pathogenesis. These insights hold promise for improved understanding and targeted therapies for this condition.
