Single-Dose Psilocybin Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder

A recent phase 2 trial conducted in the US between December 2019 and June 2022 has shown promising results for the use of psilocybin as a treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). The trial involved 104 adult participants with MDD who received either a single dose of psilocybin or a niacin placebo, both administered with psychological support. Results revealed a significant reduction in depressive symptoms and functional disability in the psilocybin group compared to the niacin group. While there were more adverse events with psilocybin, there were no serious treatment-related issues. This study adds to the growing evidence supporting psilocybin as a potential intervention for MDD.
