Oral azithromycin (AZI) shows promise in preventing postpartum infections during vaginal births, but its impact on neonatal health remains inconclusive. A systematic review and meta-analysis of four randomized controlled trials involving over 42,000 mothers and newborns found that a single dose of oral AZI significantly reduced the risk of puerperal sepsis, mastitis, endometritis, wound infection, overall infection rate, and fever in mothers. However, no significant differences were observed in neonatal outcomes. The study suggests that AZI effectively prevents postpartum infections in mothers but doesn't strongly affect neonatal outcomes.
