Sleep Apnea Physiological Burdens and Cardiovascular Morbidity and Mortality

A study delved into the risks posed by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and found that both hypoxic (oxygen-deprivation) and ventilatory (reduced ventilation) burdens significantly raise the chances of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. Notably, the hypoxic burden was primarily attributed to ventilatory burden, with other factors like obesity and spirometry playing minor roles. Moreover, 78% of hypoxic burden variation was attributed to ventilatory burden, emphasizing its importance in OSA-related CVD.
