The present study aimed to investigate the effect of sleep restriction (SR) on insulin sensitivity and energy metabolism in postmenopausal women. Fourteen women underwent a randomized crossover trial of four nights of habitual sleep and four nights of SR. Results showed that SR reduced insulin sensitivity and fat oxidation during high-dose insulin infusion, but did not alter resting energy metabolism. The findings highlight the role of insufficient sleep in metabolic dysfunction following menopause and call for larger trials investigating the relationship between sleep disturbances and metabolic dysfunction during menopause.
