
A study investigated small airway morphological changes in 39 women with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) compared to controls, assessing parameters like airway thickness and closure. LAM patients exhibited increased closure index, collagen, smooth muscle content, and TGF-beta expression. Severe LHS and functional impairment correlated with heightened airway thickness. Bronchiolar inflammation was mild, and LAM cell infiltration was rare. LHS is associated with obstructive patterns, air trapping, and reduced DLCO, while airway wall thickness is linked to FEV1, FVC, and collagen content. The study highlights associations between small airway remodeling, functional impairment, and histological severity in LAM.
