Small-volume blood collection techniques are set to revolutionize patient care in ICUs.

The study, involving over 27,000 patients across 25 Canadian ICUs, demonstrated that using "small-volume" tubes for lab tests dramatically cuts the need for blood transfusions. Most hospitals routinely draw 4-6 millilitres of blood despite lab tests requiring just 0.5 ml. This wastage can now be mitigated by switching to small-volume tubes, saving approximately 1,500 units of blood for every 100 ICU patients. The findings offer a cost-effective and sustainable solution in a time when healthcare sustainability is paramount, and blood shortages are prevalent.
