Smart Decision-Making for Hospitalized Children’s Thromboembolic Events

A new study reveals rising rates of hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE) in pediatric patients, posing significant challenges in identifying at-risk individuals for preventive measures. The study, involving 17,427 hospitalizations, tested a validated HA-VTE prognostic model alongside a haematologist review to reduce HA-VTE rates. Surprisingly, primary clinical teams hesitated to initiate recommended thromboprophylaxis (25.8% acceptance). The HA-VTE rates in the control and intervention groups (0.7% vs. 0.9%) showed no significant difference. Despite an accurate model, clinician reluctance impacted prevention efforts. Further research is necessary to develop effective HA-VTE prevention strategies and address clinician concerns about thromboprophylaxis.
