Social isolation, loneliness, and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus: results from two large prospective cohorts in Europe and East Asia and Mendelian randomization

A new study reveals a concerning link between social isolation, loneliness, and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Researchers examined data from two cohort studies, the UK Biobank and the China Health and Retirement longitudinal study, and found that social isolation and loneliness were associated with a higher risk of T2DM. The associations remained significant even after factoring in genetic predisposition and baseline glucose levels. Additionally, two-sample Mendelian randomization indicated a potential association between loneliness, reduced leisure/social activities, and increased T2DM risk. These findings underscore the importance of addressing social isolation and loneliness in T2DM prevention efforts.
