Social Ties Shape Adolescent Mental Health Differently Across Countries

A cross-country analysis of adolescents from Brazil (BHRCS) and the UK (MCS) examined how social connection factors at age 14 predict internalising and externalising symptoms by age 17.5. Key findings show that bullying and family composition significantly influence mental health. Internalising symptoms were linked to factors such as being bullied, having half-siblings, and moving homes, while externalising symptoms were associated with household size, bullying others, and single-parent households. Cultural differences were observed, with bullying having a stronger impact on UK adolescents and household size influencing Brazilian adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of understanding cultural and socioeconomic contexts in addressing adolescent mental health and call for region-specific interventions.
