
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the US, particularly among American Indian and Alaska Native individuals. Limited data exists on the causes of cardiovascular disease-related death in this population. This scientific statement provides an overview of cardiovascular health in American Indian and Alaska Native birthing individuals. It proposes a multidisciplinary framework for addressing cardiovascular diseases during preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum stages. It emphasizes factors such as substance use, mental health, lifestyle, and systemic racism, highlighting the need for culturally appropriate care, community engagement, trust-building, and increased representation in research and healthcare to improve cardiovascular health outcomes.
