Stepping Towards Better Outcomes: Mobility in Physical Therapy and Its Impact on Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia in Critically Ill Patients

The study evaluated the association between the daily average of the highest level of mobility achieved during physical therapy (PT) and the occurrence of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) or ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in critically ill patients. The results showed that higher levels of mobility achieved during PT were associated with a decreased risk of HAP or VAP among critically ill patients in a progressive mobility program. Other factors such as age, baseline ambulatory status, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II, and the previous day's mechanical ventilation status were not significantly associated with the occurrence of HAP/VAP.
