This study aimed to examine the systemic effects of major spine surgery, particularly elective lumbar spine fusion surgery, on patients. The findings revealed that the serum concentration of cortisol decreased below the preoperative level at one day after the surgery but did not significantly differ from the baseline afterwards. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels decreased at one and three days postoperatively. Testosterone levels decreased in men at one and three days post-surgery and in women at three days post-surgery. Sex hormone-binding globulin decreased at similar postoperative time points for both genders. Insulin-like growth factor 1 increased significantly at 42 and 90 days post-surgery in women and at 42 days in men. IL-6 levels were significantly elevated at one and three days post-surgery. The study concluded that elective lumbar spine fusion surgery primarily led to short-term changes in stress hormones.
