Structural and antigenic characterization of a novel genotype of Mfa1 fimbriae in Porphyromonas gingivalis

The study focused on the characterization of Mfa1 fimbriae, responsible for biofilm formation in the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis. The fimbriae consist of five proteins, Mfa1-5, with two major genotypes, mfa170 and mfa153. The mfa170 genotype is further divided into subtypes mfa170A and mfa170B. The study purified fimbriae from different strains and analyzed their components and structures. They found that the composition and structure of Mfa1 fimbriae were similar between strains, but differential protein expression and antigenic heterogeneities were detected in other fimbriae components. The findings suggest that the mfa170B genotype could be used for the novel classification of P. gingivalis due to its antigenic differences.
