Study discovers link between obesity with oral cancer immune escape - Times of India

A study conducted by the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center and School of Dentistry has revealed that obesity plays a role in enabling certain oral cancers to evade the immune system. The research, led by Dr Yu Leo Lei, demonstrated that obesity creates a tumor microenvironment that promotes tumor growth. The study found a connection between saturated fatty acids, the STING-type-I interferon pathway, and a protein called NLRC3, which explains how obesity facilitates immune escape in oral cancer. This study marks the first to establish a mechanistic link between obesity and oral cancer immune evasion, providing potential implications for translational medicine. The findings also shed light on the correlation between obesity and increased risks of oral cancer.
