Study Finds Link Between Fructose and Fructan Malabsorption in IBS Patients

A study of 186 irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients examined the association between fructose and fructan malabsorption using hydrogen breath testing (HBT). Results showed 38.2% of patients had fructose malabsorption, 48.9% had fructan malabsorption, and 22.6% had both. A significant correlation (p = 0.0283) existed between positive fructose and fructan HBT readings. Patients positive for either malabsorption had 1.951 times higher odds of testing positive for the other carbohydrate. These findings suggest a notable link between fructose and fructan malabsorption in IBS patients, emphasizing the importance of assessing both conditions in clinical management. Further investigation is needed to elucidate underlying mechanisms.
