Study Finds Link Between Respiratory Events and Genioglossus Fatigue in Severe OSA Patients

A recent study investigated the link between median frequency (MF), indicating genioglossus (GG) fatigue, and repetitive respiratory events in severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among male patients. Analysing data from 22 participants, the study noted a significant MF decrease before and during respiratory events, particularly during inspiration. This trend was evident in non-rapid eye movement sleep and lateral positions but not in rapid eye movement sleep or supine positions. MF reduction correlated with the order of respiratory events, notably in patients with an apnea–hypopnea index > 30 events/h.
