Study Finds Link Between Sex Hormones and Mortality in Aging Men

A systematic review of prospective cohort studies examined the association between sex hormones and mortality/cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in ageing men. Data from 255,830 participant-years were analyzed. Men with low baseline testosterone (<7.4 nmol/L), high luteinizing hormone (LH), or very low estradiol (<5.1 pmol/L) had increased all-cause mortality. Lower sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) concentration correlated with lower all-cause and CVD mortality. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels below 0.59 nmol/L were linked to increased incident CVD events. Conversely, DHT concentrations above 2.45 nmol/L were associated with higher all-cause and CVD mortality. These findings highlight the complex relationship between sex hormones and health outcomes in ageing men.
