Study Finds No Impact of Antimicrobial Prophylaxis on Infections After Laparoscopic Nephrectomy

A retrospective study explored antimicrobial prophylaxis's role in laparoscopic nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma. Among 1000 patients from August 2019 to November 2021, 556 received prophylaxis, while 444 did not. Results revealed a similar 30-day postoperative infection rate (5.0% with prophylaxis vs. 4.1% without). Logistic regression analyses showed prophylaxis didn't affect infection occurrence. Hemoglobin levels and partial nephrectomy independently influenced prophylaxis usage. The study suggests no impact of antimicrobial prophylaxis on postoperative infections.
