Study Finds Osteocalcin's Protective Role Against Muscle Loss in Weight Reduction Without Metabolic Syndrome

The study involving 130 overweight or obese individuals without metabolic syndrome explored the protective role of osteocalcin (OC) against muscle loss during a 4-month high-protein, energy-restricted weight management program. Results showed a decrease in various metabolic indicators post-weight loss, including BMI, body fat percentage, and insulin levels. Notably, OC demonstrated a positive correlation with skeletal muscle percentage. The findings suggest that OC significantly protects muscle mass during weight reduction, particularly in males on high-protein diets without metabolic syndrome.
