
A study at Queen Mary University of London has identified two genes responsible for rendering head and neck cancer patients resistant to chemotherapy. By silencing one of these genes, previously resistant cancer cells can become responsive to chemotherapy. These genes are active in various human cancers, suggesting broader applications. Additionally, the team found two compounds, Sirodesmin A and Carfilzomib, capable of targeting these genes and enhancing chemotherapy effectiveness. Repurposing existing drugs could offer cost-effective treatments. This groundbreaking study could pave the way for personalized cancer therapies based on patients' genes and tumor types, improving survival rates.
