GASTROENTEROLOGY

A recent study, spanning January 2015 to December 2021, assessed the outcomes of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LSC) techniques in 170 adult patients. The majority of procedures (76%) were performed in acute situations, with fenestrating LSC being the predominant technique (67.6%). Complications occurred in 47.1% of patients, with bile leaks in 35.3%. Fenestrating LSC was associated with significantly higher complications, bile leaks, rescue postoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) needs, and longer hospital stays. The study suggests cautious consideration of LSC techniques, favoring reconstituted approaches to mitigate associated morbidity.
