Study Identifies High Anemia Prevalence Among Indian Female Teens, Highlighting Teenage Motherhood as a Significant Risk Factor

A recent study utilizing data from National Family Health Surveys (NFHS) has revealed that nearly 60% of adolescent females in India suffer from anemia. Factors contributing to this concerning trend include early marriage, motherhood, poor nutritional status, socioeconomic variables, education, and geographical location. Alarmingly, the prevalence of anemia has risen in several Indian states, with over 60% affected in 11 states in 2019-21 compared to just 5 states in 2015-16. The study underscores the urgent need for tailored interventions to address this significant public health issue among Indian teenage girls.
