Study Links Depressive Disorder to Increased Risk of Bell’s Palsy: Nationwide Cohort Analysis

A study investigated the potential link between depressive disorder (DD) and the risk of developing Bell’s palsy. The study identified 44,198 DD patients and 1,433,650 comparison subjects. After propensity score-weighting, demographic differences were balanced. The Cox proportional hazards model revealed a significantly increased risk of Bell’s palsy in DD patients (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.315, 95% CI: 1.168–1.481). Age, sex, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes were also identified as independent risk factors for Bell’s palsy. These findings suggest a connection between DD and Bell’s palsy risk, emphasizing the importance of understanding and managing mental health conditions in clinical practice.
