Study Links Hydrochlorothiazide Use to Rare Skin Cancers: AFX/PDS Risk Factor Identified

A study investigated the association between hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) use and the development of atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and pleomorphic dermal sarcoma (PDS) compared to squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and basal cell carcinomas (BCC). They examined 146 cases of AFX/PDS and 438 controls (SCC/BCC) matched for sex and age. Results revealed a significantly higher prevalence of HCTZ use among AFX/PDS patients (44.5%) compared to SCC/BCC patients (25.3%). Moreover, AFX/PDS patients exhibited a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus. These findings suggest a potential association between HCTZ use and AFX/PDS development, alongside implications for diabetes mellitus as a contributing factor.
