A recent study investigated the correlation between telomere length and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk in coronary heart disease patients. The CORonary Diet Intervention with Olive Oil and Cardiovascular Prevention (CORDIOPREV) trial enrolled 1002 participants aged 20–75, assigning them either a Mediterranean or low-fat diet. Patients with shorter telomeres (<20th percentile) showed a 1.65-fold higher risk of T2DM. Remarkably, the Mediterranean diet attenuated this risk, suggesting its potential for T2DM prevention.
