Study on Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury and Women's Quality of Life After Vaginal Birth

The study aimed to compare the quality of life in women with obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) versus those with intact perineum or minor vaginal tears after their first vaginal birth. Using the PFDI-20 questionnaire, 133 cases (III- and IV-degree tears) and 133 controls (intact perineum or I- and II-degree tears) were surveyed three and 12 months post-delivery. Results indicated significant differences, revealing a strong association between severe lacerations and persistent pelvic floor dysfunction at 12 months. The PFDI-20 questionnaire proves valuable for diagnosing and monitoring genital prolapse, and faecal and urinary incontinence in primiparous women with an OASI history, aiding in appropriate rehabilitative treatment.
