Study Questions Race-Specific Cardiovascular Risk Prediction Tools

Concerns about the use of race-specific risk prediction in clinical medicine have emerged, particularly in the context of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) assessment. The commonly used pooled cohort risk equations (PCEs) stratify by race, prompting a study to assess their incremental value. Analyzing data from the biracial REGARDS cohort, the study found that while PCEs performed well overall, they exhibited poorer performance in certain subgroups. Removing race or incorporating social determinants of health did not enhance model performance, suggesting ongoing challenges in refining risk prediction tools.
