Study Questions Simulation Accuracy in Cataract Surgery Training

A study using the EyeSi cataract surgery simulator assessed the impact of distraction on surgical performance among 10 ophthalmology trainees and 10 consultants. Participants completed six simulated cataract surgeries, half with cognitive distractions. Measurements included surgical scores, blood pressure, and pulse rates. Results showed no statistically significant effect of distraction on any metric. Interestingly, consultants performed worse overall than trainees (P = 0.0229) and experienced more severe errors (P = 0.0074), raising concerns about the realism of simulations. This finding prompts questions about the accuracy of simulators in mirroring real-world surgical scenarios, despite their global adoption in ophthalmology training curricula to enhance patient safety and reduce surgeon stress.
