Study Reveals Distinct Spectral Patterns During NREM to REM Sleep Transition in Rats

The study explores the spectral characteristics of the transitional stage (IS) between non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in rats, utilizing electrocorticogram (ECoG) recordings from the olfactory bulb (OB), primary motor (M1), primary somatosensory (S1), and secondary visual cortex (V2). Results showed that the IS, lasting up to 20 seconds, exhibited distinct power spectral patterns not seen in consolidated NREM or REM stages. Notably, sigma (11–16 Hz) and beta (17–30 Hz) power increased during the IS, beginning in the frontal brain regions. Sigma infra low coupling (~0.02 Hz) also became more prominent during the IS, occurring at a slower frequency than NREM sleep. These findings indicate that the NREM to REM transition has a unique, extended spectral profile, supporting earlier reports of a more prolonged transition.
