In a study aimed at establishing correlations between Postoperative Urinary Retention (POUR) and (1) surgical approach and (2) anesthetic agents such as sugammadex and glycopyrrolate, researchers conducted a thorough analysis of L4-S1 single-level lumbar fusion surgeries from 2018 to 2021. Among 899 patients, 51 with POUR were matched to 153 without. Succinylcholine administration and reduced postoperative activity were associated with POUR, while sugammadex use proved protective. The study found no significant difference in POUR development between anterior and posterior spinal fusion approaches. These findings provide valuable insights into factors influencing POUR occurrence.
