Study Reveals Gastrointestinal Involvement in Common Variable Immunodeficiency Disorder Patients

The retrospective study on 21 Common Variable Immunodeficiency Disorder (CVID) patients with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 2000 to 2020 aimed to assess clinical, endoscopic, and histopathological features and their correlation with infections. Chronic diarrhoea prevailed in 95.2% of patients, with 85% experiencing low body weight and malabsorption. Notably, small bowel villous atrophy was present in 90.5% of cases. Patients with nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (NLH) had a significantly higher infection rate (85.7% vs. 21.4%). Comprehensive evaluation aids CVID diagnosis and identifies co-infections for proper treatment.
