Study Reveals Impact of Dental Handpiece Speed on Aerosol Transmission of SARS-CoV-2

The study assessed the transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 during dental procedures by simulating aerosols with spiked viral proteins. Dental operations were conducted on a manikin with varying handpiece speeds and cooling conditions. Results showed aerosol spread up to 60cm, with the highest contamination risks within a 30cm radius. Handpiece speed significantly affected aerosol generation and viral load. Lower speeds reduced contamination. Operator and assistant positions had the highest viral loads. Findings recommend minimal handpiece speed and adequate protective equipment for dental staff to mitigate virus spread.
