Study Reveals Increased Mortality Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Patients with Peripheral Artery Disease

A study investigated the mortality risks associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and peripheral artery disease (PAD) onset. Analyzing data from 150,215 individuals with T2D and 346,423 controls without T2D, matched for age and sex, the study found higher rates of all-cause mortality in T2D patients following PAD onset compared to controls. T2D patients exhibited adjusted hazard ratios of 1.12 for all-cause mortality and 1.13 for cardiovascular mortality post-PAD onset. Age and hyperglycemia were significant predictors of mortality. The findings emphasize the importance of optimized treatment strategies for individuals with T2D and PAD to mitigate mortality risks.
