Study Reveals Interleukin-6 as a Potent Marker for Assessing Myocardial Necrosis and Coronary Artery Disease Severity

The study involving 310 coronary artery disease (CAD) patients and 210 controls explored the link between interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and CAD severity. Patients with high IL-6 levels (≥9.5 pg/mL) showed a significant association with elevated Gensini scores (>40), indicating CAD severity. While IL-6 wasn't correlated with stenosis degree and vessel score, it emerged as a potent predictor for infarct size in myocardial infarction patients, outperforming myonecrosis biomarkers according to ROC curve analysis. The study suggests IL-6's potential as a robust marker for evaluating myocardial necrosis and CAD severity.
